In November 2005 HP introduced their Color LaserJet 3000 series printers, followed in September 2006 by the 2700 models. The 3000 models had OEM stated print speeds of up to 30 pages per minute (ppm) for black and 15 ppm for color (letter), and were marketed as the hopeful replacements for ink jet printers in the home and small office. The 2700 was OEM rated at 12 ppm for black and 10 ppm for color (A4).

The 3000 and 2700 utilize the same supplies set, yielding 3,500 (3.5K) color pages and 6,500 (6.5K) black pages. Cartridges are similar to those used by the HP LaserJet 3800, and the internal components are interchangeable. All cartridges require color-specific chips for correct printer operation.
